March Feature Spotlight: Master Pages and SharePoint Branding

A lot of clients ask us, “how do I make the SharePoint layout closer to the look of my website?”, or “how do I jazz up the default SharePoint site templates?” The answer is by using custom or modified SharePoint master pages.

A master page is a tailored page, built on ASP.NET technology, allowing defined pages of a SharePoint site collection to inherit a uniform appearance. Master pages work with content pages to deliver a consistent look and feel to any content page type used within an applied site collection. With master pages, a SharePoint site designer, using tools like Visual Studio 2005 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer, can provide a unique look and feel to a site changing color schemes, logos, fonts, and fonts. The master page is also where designers place items that are shared by all current and future pages, such as navigational controls, company contact information, and copyright notices.

On your top-level SharePoint site, there is a special document library called the Master Page and Page Layout Gallery found in your site settings page. All page layouts and master pages are stored in this document library. In Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, there are many out of the box options and any of these pages can be assigned to the existing site collection. This action would override the default master page appropriately named “default.master”. Other layouts can also be tested out like “blueband.master” or “blackband.master” and applied to a site collection prior to official site publishing.

Here are some of the many benefits to using a custom master page:

Place standard content like address and copyright information on one page
